ultra[marine]

ultra[marine] is a research platform affiliated with the Department of Art History at Trier University (Germany). It brings together scholars who conduct art-historical research on the sea, water, and all that is influenced by water. With a visual studies focus in the Early Modern and Modern periods, ultra[marine] serves as the disciplinary ‚ship’s boat‘ of its ‚mother ship‘, the Trier-based TRANSMARE-Institute for the Study of the Transfer of People, Goods, and Ideas from Antiquity to the Present Day. The projects share a common interest in maritime knowledge and nautical expertise, which artists and practitioners pass on through visual codes in paintings, drawings, illustrations and maps. ultra[marine] uses this digital platform to present established research networks, successful individual projects, as well as dissertations and final theses by early-career researchers.
The goal is to highlight the art-historical contributions to Trier University’s maritime research profile. As we firmly believe that academic exchange is more important than ever in times of increasing climate change and threats to our oceans, we invite all art historians who are interested to join us and to present their own research in Blue Art History on this platform.
